Melissa McBride breaks down the intense new episode of ‘The Walking Dead’

February 15, 2016

Our Walking Dead family is finally back together … but for how long?

After a long stretch of episodes where our regulars were separated and off fighting different fights, seeing everyone working together in last night’s midseason premiere was a glorious sight.

But, as regular viewers of AMC’s hit thriller know, it’s never long from the time one battle ends and another materializes and that’s what season 6B is all about.

As Melissa McBride, who brings a fierce heart to the show as Carol, told us in a preview for the return episode, there are many threats coming their way besides the imminent appearance of Jeffrey Dead Morgan as villainous Negan.

During our post-mortem chat, McBride revealed she’s more than a little excited to finally be working with a certain someone she doesn’t normally get screen time with as well as which characters are still in Carol’s heart and whether rules exist anymore in the post-apocalyptic world.

MASHABLE: This return episode really punctuated that the group is back together. Are they more invincible than ever or is there still a lot of fragility with them as a group?
MELISSA MCBRIDE: I think we all know better that nothing’s invincible in the world but they are certainly, I think, a stronger force. That’s the first time we’ve seen that whole community really band together and the stakes have never been higher either. And they really stepped up and stepped out of their fear and saw exactly how the world has changed and the threat of the walkers, especially in those great numbers face to face just trampling their community. They really all stepped forward to put them down and push them out. They come together and I love that. It’s so tragic, though.

This don’t happen a lot on the show but you had a few moments of silence in this episode before Morgan enters the room. Are there different challenges in those moments?
You know what? I love those quiet moments. I don’t care what I’m watching. I love to see characters just alone in their solitude, their private moments. I love to see what they do when no one’s watching. And I do love those thoughtful moments and you wonder what is going on in their mind, the thoughts that they’re thinking when they just take a second…I like it as an actor because it’s just a quiet, personal, private moment and they’re telling, you know, they’re very telling about that character.

What’s Carol thinking in those moments like that?
I’m thinking what are her thoughts … the situation she’s just found herself in and come out of and all that’s going on and the world’s tumbling down. As Carol, Carol’s thinking about herself. ‘Where am I at? What has this brought me to? What am I doing? What do I do with this?’

Moving forward, will we see Carol connecting with anybody that we haven’t really seen her with much before?
Yeah. Carol and Maggie are going to spend some time together. That’s going to be great. It’s great to finally get some good meaty stuff with Lauren. Our characters really have only shared a couple of scenes and just a few lines of dialogue so there’s some good meatier stuff coming. It’s something I’ve just looked forward to for a very long time so that was exciting for me. Then, obviously, we have guest appearances and characters come in. There’s a lot to look forward to.

Moving into these episodes, have you understood Carol differently in these episodes? Maybe there was something new about her you were able to explore.
There are changes and flips for all these characters in every season, every episode. That’s just the nature of evolving in what the world gives you. You trek through life and you turn a corner and here’s something else to deal with and to learn from and to grow from and to bounce off of and realize something new about yourself or to challenge the way you think about something.

Yeah, there’s changes ahead for all of these characters just because we keep living and dealing with life and what this world gives to us. In 6B there are definitely some corners [and] I experience different aspects of Carol that I have not yet. It’s exciting.

Glenn (Steven Yeun) has some dialogue in the episode where he talks about the people you carry with you even if they are no longer in the world. Who would those people be for Carol?
I think certainly Sophia and Lizzie, Laurie, T-Dog, Andrea…I think everyone in that core group. They’ve been traveling along, surviving together. They’re sacrificing themselves to different extents to keep everyone safe and unfortunately you have to do some horrible things to make that happen.

At this point, what are the rules for Carol as far as survival and killing? Are there rules left at this point?
I don’t think it’s a world without rules. I do think that her number one rule with conditions is that you eliminate the threat, just eliminate the threat. Leave out the liabilities and eliminate the threat.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 6 Spoilers: Will Carol and Morgan Finally Say Goodbye in Season Finale?

January 10, 2016

As the mid-season premiere of ‘The Walking Dead’ season six draws near, several details about the finale have already made the headlines. According to The Spoiling Dead Fans, rivals Carol (Melissa McBride) and Morgan (Lennie James) could be facing grave dangers in episode 16.

As pointed out by the fan site, McBride and James both filmed a scene in November in which a “mystery male character” pointed “his gun at someone.” However, because of the scene being blocked off, it is unclear whether the said character will shoot the weapon or not.

Moreover, the Spoiling Dead Fans shared that a fighter “was seen circling over someone (possibly Carol).” He went on to speak to the man holding the weapon and leaned over the person lying on the ground. It remains unknown whether Morgan takes down the man, or the man is able to fight back and finally kill off Morgan.

According to witnesses, McBride looked untidy as she filmed the scene; the insiders shared that one side of her face had been either “very dirty or bruised.” They also claimed that she could have been the person lying on the ground.

While it is unclear whether the duo will be able to make it out of the season and to the next, actor Ross Marquand opened up to ComicBook.com last year and shared how he found the finale to be “the most rot, like emotionally rot, and dark episode” he has ever come across in his acting career.

“I’ve never seen or read an episode that is so dark and so compelling in my life and that’s the God’s honest truth,” stated Marquand, who takes on the role of Aaron on the hit zombie drama.

The actor admitted that the script was twisted enough to make his stop reading a couple of times.

“I told Andy, I don’t normally get so affected by scripts that I have to put them down, but I had to stop reading this at three different times,” he shared. “I couldn’t read it, it was messing me up. It was tough to read. It’s phenomenal writing but it’s just so emotionally dark and twisted that we had to put it down several times.”

“The Walking Dead” season six is set to return with episode nine, titled ‘No Way Out’ on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 9 p.m. on AMC. The official trailer for the episode can be viewed below.

EP Teases Hard Time Ahead Of Melissa McBride’s Carol

November 08, 2015

Carol (Melissa McBride) was left with no choice but to ditch her “Suzy homemaker” disguise when The Wolves attacked Alexandria in “The Walking Dead” season 6, episode 2, titled “JSS.” And now that people know what she’s truly capable of, things are going to be difficult for her.

“It’s going to be hard for Carol,” showrunner Scott M. Gimple told TVLine. “She likes being invisible. … And seeing all of these people potentially being grateful towards her is going to be difficult.”

In addition, Morgan telling her that she doesn’t like killing will start to worry her. “When Morgan said, ‘You don’t like it’ it’s kind of like the thing she didn’t want to hear, the thing that she was ignoring all of this time [amid] all the killing,” Gimple said. “And then hearing it and feeling it, it’s weighing on her.”

Though Carol wanted to continue her undercover, revealing her true self might bring positive effect to some of the surviving residents of Alexandria.

“They’ll definitely see that she’s a capable fighter and perhaps it will inspire some of them [to change],” McBride told The Hollywood Reporter. “For me, it all goes back to how unlikely Carol is to be running around with guns and knives, and it’s awesome for me to watch her survive in the way she does. She’s still unlikely for me.”

“It is a wake-up call for them,” the “Mist” actress commented of what the recent attack means to the Alexandrians. “This is what Rick [Andrew Lincoln] has been trying to tell them the whole time. It’s just reiterating and illustrating how bad it is. We are a group that is equipped to try and defend ourselves against this kind of thing because we’ve done it before. We’ll see how they react to that — and where that puts Rick, [Carol] and our group within the community.”

Are you happy that Carol’s disguise is already over?

‘The Walking Dead’ Director Greg Nicotero Talks That Funny Porch Scene Between Daryl And Carol

March 04, 2015

“The Walking Dead” director Greg Nicotero revealed that Norman Reedus’ “You look ridiculous!” line in last Sunday’s episode was actually an ad-lib.

“The Walking Dead” actor Norman Reedus revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly — published last month — that Daryl would have funny one-liners in the remaining episodes of the show’s Season 5. And in last Sunday’s episode, titled “Remember,” viewers have finally heard one of those much anticipated lines.

After Carol (Melissa McBride) ditched her badass persona in favor of a Stepford-esque housewife during her one-on-one interview with Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh), she stepped out of their group’s house dressed in khakis and a cardigan sweater. As she walked down the sidewalk to go to her new job in Alexandria, Norman yelled, “You look ridiculous!”

Greg Nicotero, who directed the episode, told Entertainment Weekly that Reedus’ line was actually an ad-lib. “When I did the cut, I was like, I’m leaving that in because that is exactly what Daryl would say,” he told the outlet. “And I don’t know if it made it in to the episode or not, but at one point Carol goes, ‘Thank you!’ as she’s walking away.

The 51-year-old SFX and make-up wizard further discussed the scene in an interview with Yahoo TV, saying, “When we shot that scene, we all stood there in shock and looked at Melissa, and like… that’s a tricky thing to pull off, that transformation of a character.”

“We’re so accustomed to spending years watching all of these people dirty, sweaty, covered in blood. [So] when Melissa stepped out the first time, we all sort of [started] laughing,” Nicotero explained. “Even Melissa was like, ‘This is so silly. How are we going to pull this off?'”

Nicotero continued, “When we did the first couple of takes, Norman was just giggling and laughing at how ludicrous this whole idea of Carol dressing up as a soccer mom was. Every time I watch that scene, and especially the way Norman looks up at her and then looks back down, he’s like ‘Pfft.’ He does that great thing. Norman always does.”

“I love Norman and Melissa, and they’re both such genuine performers that just adding that little flair takes it to such a great place,” he said.

“The Walking Dead’s” next episode titled “Forget” airs Sunday, March 8, at 9:00 p.m. on AMC.

Norman Reedus Talks Daryl Dixon’s Possible Romance With Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier; ‘The Walking Dead’ Star Says ‘I Don’t Want To See It Coming’

February 13, 2015

With the return of “The Walking Dead” season 5, fans have been waiting to hear more about Norman Reedus’s Daryl Dixon. Will romance bloom between Daryl and Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier?

In an recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, “The Walking Dead” season 5 star Norman Reedus shares his thoughts about Daryl Dixon’s romantic relationship, and the possibility that Carol Peletier might be on the receiving end.

Norman Reedus said, “I think if he’s going to zero in on one, it’s going to happen by accident, and he’s not going to be the one zeroing in first.” He continued, “Then he’ll just stay with her. I think he’s like an eagle-once they start flying together, they’ll always fly together.”

He also compares real life from the possible romantic experience that his character Daryl Dixon might experience. “It’s become such a big deal, who I hook up with [on ‘The Walking Dead’]. In real life, when you hook up with someone and it’s real, you don’t see it coming, so I don’t want to see it coming.”

For the fans who are waiting for romance to begin between Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier in “The Walking Dead” season 5, this is not good news. Caryl (amalgamation of Carol and Daryl) is the most obvious coupling; from what Norman Reedus has recently pointed out, should there be romance for Daryl Dixon, he doesn’t want it to be as obvious as Carol.

Meanwhile, Dixonne fans (Daryl and Michonne) are still rooting for Danai Gurira’s Michonne to claim Daryl Dixon’s heart. To which Norman Reedus commented in an interview with Daily Beast and said, “She’s a cute girl. I’m not opposed to it.”
